Macbook Pro Comparison Macmall vs Apple StoreOrdering a MacBook Pro from MacMall offers a little bit of a discount over buying directly from Apple. They buy in bulk so can offer a quantity discount. Apple likes to fix prices across vendors now so it's hard to find anything less than what the Apple Store itself has. MacMall can also offer some promotional deals from third parties such as a free printer sometimes if that's something you're interested in. (Clicking on "buy" below just takes you to the page where you can compare or order it). The current promotions offer a "free" update to the latest Mountain Lion OS, OS X 10.8. Also with a mail in rebate you can get Parallels Desktop 8 for "free", at $49.99 and a full mail-in rebate (select uninstalled, rather than installed, they'll just send the CD). Belkin N600 Wireless N Router Recommendation with Embedded Norton Parental Control Software
Here's is the overview/specifics sheet in PDF of the Norton Parental Control software that comes on the router; http://www.belkin.com/support/dl/f5d7230_parentl_control.pdf I would also certainly sign up for this service below from Norton and try it out first, it is free to use, while the router filtering service on the router above "protects" your kids from inappropriate sites, it didn't appear to have the time of day functions like this Norton Online Family does, which would allow more of the dedicated daily study time (no internet between 7PM an 9PM for example); both will give you reports for an additional fee, but this may be all you need right now; https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs Be sure to watch the video on this page on the bottom right for an overview. I believe it was on TV some evening this week and I only saw the end of it, all of it now, but it gives some insight into the trends we're seeing with students and technology lately, both positive and negative. Comparison of Cisco and Sonicwall Wireless Router, VPN, Firewall Security AppliancesThe Cisco SA 500 Series Security Appliances, including this model SA520W-K9 provide a four Port 10/100/1000 RJ-45 (1GB) network connectivity to downstream devices, including a single WAN port. This model also provides wireless connectivity using up to the N standard. It's licensed for two SSL VPN tunnels, which could limit how many connections can be used simultaneously unless more licenses are purchased down the road. It provides all the necessary minimum requirements for any business situation, including an Advanced Firewall, Router, Gateway Antivirus and Anti-Spyware, Intrusion Prevention and Content Filtering. The Dell SonicWall TZ 205 Security Appliance is a great all in one solution for providing a business grade Advanced Firewall, Router, Gateway Antivirus and Anti-Spyware, Intrusion Prevention and Content Filtering, while also allowing some advanced features like Mobile Connect (iOS and Android connectivity from home) as well as a more functional VPN out of the gate, with 10 VPN Tunnels, two SSL VPN Peers, and unlimited VPN nodes. Wireless N standard capability is also a standard feature, there are also five 10/100/1000 (1GB) downstream network interfaces, as opposed to the Cisco device above only having four.
Belkin N300 Wireless N Router Review and Setup TipA customer was searching for a modestly priced home router for better coverage and Wireless N standard capability. For less than $40 the Belkin N300 fit the bill, the setup was mostly automatic, and we began locking down the wireless network and turning on the rudimentary Norton Internet Security filtering software built in to the router. There were several levels of security with the lowest blocking only known malware sites and threats. We were then however, unable to get the router to automatically detect the modem and connection type. Belkins' guided software Wizard is kind of humorous as it searched vain for the modem and connection type. The delay screen would say, "This is a tough one" and "Feel free to grab a cup of coffee" "This could take up to 7 Minutes". Unfortunately the process would never completed due to a glitch where if Norton Security was enabled though the web administration (via IP) before this automatic connection search initiated by the software (which should be unnecessary if you have typical automatic settings), the ability to allow automatic DNS discovery from your ISP was disabled. By default the router is not set to grab an automatic IP address from your ISP, nor is DNS automatic. I've posted this in case someone else is setting up the router and they run into the same issue. Norton's built-in security on this device obviously supplants DNS resolution, so it made sense if you thought about it, but when the device doesn't grab DNS out of the box, it could be a confusing issue and waste your time but requiring a call into the ISP. Additionally, the manner in which it prevents you from checking the box to grab DNS automatically, almost appears to be a Java or Browser based problem. The upc code from this device from Wal-Mart was printed as 072286881783 should you not be able to determine the model number. In the future I would recommend the Belkin 450 Dual Band Wireless N Router for a typical home environment over this lesser model, this problem with the embedded Norton Internet Security filter would probably still have come up, but for the coverage capabilities inherent to dual band antennas, this would be the better model for under $60. Changing The Windows Product Key To Activate Windows 8 ProThis would probably also work to allow you to change the product key on all versions of Windows 8 Professional, Windows 8 Enterprise, or pre-release versions.
