Using a serial to usb adapter with MacOS X can initially be a challenge. You must first determine the interface that is being used. So issue this command to view the available interfaces;

ls -la /dev/tty* -crt

Locate and use the interface that appears to be usbserial/usbmodem with this command;

screen /dev/tty.usbserial* 9600

The Western Digital ShareSpace NAS provides a compact and simple way to store large amounts of data with multiple computers on a local network. While not a full fledged "server" the Network Attached Storage device does give you a cost effect answer to this need. Be certain however you backup your data either locally on your computer or on a completely other system.
